Oklahoma WR Theo Wease Jr. transferring to Missouri

Theo Wease Jr. caught 19 passes for 378 yards and four touchdowns this year. His best season came as a sophomore in 2020, when he hauled in 37 passes for 530 yards and four touchdowns.

Wease was a five-star recruit out of Allen (Texas) High in 2019.

Iowa LB Jestin Jacobs commits to Oregon

This is a big pickup for Oregon and a big loss for Iowa. Had he not suffered a season-ending biceps injury, linebacker Jestin Jacobs was a likely top-100 draft pick.

Virginia adds a top FCS QB

Virginia lands Monmouth transfer Tony Muskett, one of the top FCS QBs on the market.

Muskett, a Springfield, Va., native, threw for 1,997 yards, 17 touchdowns and eight interceptions this season.

Former Cincinnati cornerback Ja'Quan Sheppard committed to Maryland on Sunday.

Sheppard emerged as a first-team All-AAC player this season, recording 50 tackles, 4 1/2 tackles for loss and 10 pass breakups.

USC lands Georgia State transfer OLB Jamil Muhammad

A quarterback out of high school, Muhammad originally signed with Vanderbilt before enrolling at Georgia State. He moved to linebacker and recorded six sacks as a redshirt sophomore in 2021. He had 44 tackles and 1 1/2 sacks in 2022.

Louisville DL Caleb Banks is bound for Florida

Banks, a three-star recruit out of high school, recorded two tackles, a sack and a forced fumble in six games this season as a redshirt freshman.

Butler, a sophomore next season, could fit as a key figure up front in the defense of coordinator Tony White, who has reportedly been added to Matt Rhule’s staff.

Every offseason, the transfer portal becomes less of a boogeyman in the eyes of fans and coaches, and we continue to learn more about the player movement behaviors and trendlines in this era of college football. Comparing last year with this one, much of the transfer portal heat is tied to high-profile coaching changes, but we haven’t seen many of those so far.

So the portal is light on easily recognizable names right now. The transfer window stays open until Jan. 18. There are some players, though, who will step into new situations next season with important chapters left to write before trying their hands at the next level. Even with warts in their tape, there is reason for at least a little optimism over their chances at getting an NFL shot.

That’s especially true of the quarterbacks on the move. Let’s take a look at five of the most interesting transfer-portal options at that position, as well as a few other names to remember.

As coaching staffs across the country compete for the more than 1,000 players who entered the NCAA transfer portal this week, here’s a reminder of why those efforts matter so much. It’s time for The Athletic’s second annual All-Portal Team.

Just like our 2021 squad, this group is loaded with All-America and all-conference performers who came from a variety of backgrounds and previous stops. The All-Portal Team recognizes the transfer players who were most productive on their new teams and most impactful for this college football season. Only newcomers who joined their current program in 2022 were eligible to make this list.

Many of these players were much-hyped when they hit the portal during the 2021-22 cycle, but this team also features a bunch of surprise standouts. These picks are never easy, especially when you consider how many players transferred this year, and many more players merit recognition. But here’s a closer look at the most successful transfer portal pickups of the year.
