Originating from Transylvania, Romania, Ion Tiriac was born on May 9, 1939. Prior to his successful tennis playing career, he was actually a part of the national hockey team of Romania which participated at the 1964 Olympic Games in Austria.
Eventually, he decided to change his career and went on to play tennis. He has defeated numerous tennis players which earned him the nickname "Count Dracula". During his course to success, another Romanian player was making a big name in the same sport. He was Ilie Năstase, also popular as Nasty. The dynamic duo became one of the most feared tandems in the sport. Among the earliest major tournaments which they joined was the 1966 French Open where they finished second. Four years later, they won the French Open doubles title.
Outside tennis, Tiriac was also making a great deal of money from his business ventures. In 1990, he founded the privately owned bank, Banca Tiriac, which became the first bank established after the communist era in Romania. Eventually, he earned shares in various companies across different industries including residential and commercial real estate, retail, insurance, airline, and auto dealerships. Today, he owns several companies which include Tiriac Leasing, Tir Travel, TiriacAuto, Allianz-Tiriac Asigurari Romania, HVB Tiriac Bank, TiriacAIR, and Tiriac Holdings.
